Principal’s blog | Morning drop off

19 August 2019

Welcome to week 7! Morning time at school is a very busy time for teaching staff. After getting their planning and resources in place, they welcome the children in at 8:45am. I often see parents who are very keen to join their children in the classroom as they drop them off. This is a lovely thought, but can also become a distraction in the room at times.

In our classrooms we use the morning time to help children settle in for the day focusing on being calm and organised. Children will often reflect on their breakfast or discuss what they did last night as a way to start the conversation for the day. Teachers will often set the scene for what will be happening by discussing the daily schedule. This provides predictability and helps children feel comfortable with their day. However as long as a child knows their parent is around, they are often unable to give their full attention to what is happening in the class. I believe the first few minutes of the day can dictate how effective that day will be. So I am asking parents to consider how long they stay around the classroom in the mornings to help support the children.

To help build independence for younger children in Foundation and Year 1 you could say good bye to them at a set point and let them walk themselves into the room to get set up for the day. This might feel a little odd at first but will have a good impact on your child’s future abilities to operate independently in the school.

If you would like to discuss something with the classroom teacher you could consider the following options:

  • Write them a letter asking for a time to talk
  • Send them a message via Seesaw
  • Check if the teacher would have a few minutes to talk after school
  • Ask them when there would be a good time to talk, as you’d like to discuss something
  • Call the School Office on 5991 3600 to formally request a meeting time
  • Send an email to cranbourne.carlisle.ps@edumail.vic.gov.au

We value our parent community and look forward to successfully partnering with you to support your child at Cranbourne Carlisle.

Have a great week,
